Weekend Job at PC Show'05

Got myself a temp job promoting twinhxad laptops at the PC Show over the weekend.
It was
- fun, meeting new people, all sorts of wierdos and "special" people
- disappointing, earning miserable comission compared to friends representing other brands
- tiring, imagine standing 10 hours daily and talking non stop
- educational, learned something about the laptop trade and electronics

1st thing 1st, just in case you dunnoe what's twinhxad, its a laptop maker, and they're actually making laptops behind the scene for some famous brands. I would say their laptop are competitively priced and practically designed.

At the show, I met new friends working with me, the 2 full timers, Mark & James, were nice guys, they're really helpful and its really great working with them. They were really proficient in their jobs and are always willing to help, great guys... hope I get to work with them again! The other promoters were interesting too. There's 2 Ben at our booth, so they named themselves B1 & B2, just like the Bananas in Pyjamas. Then there's 2 ladies, didn't get to know their names. Cute little ladies, they are fun to hang out with.

At the show, you also get to see all sorts of wierdos from bargain hunters to money splashers. The bargain hunters will try all means to get your price to the minimum, quoting you out of the world low prices and still asking for loads of freebies. Then there's a few examples of money splashers around. I met someone who will buy 2 laptops from you to gain points in her card. The 2 laptops were paid for without second thoughts and they're meant for her primary school kids to game. There's another uncle in his 60s who brought also his fat "girlfriend" from china, the 2 of them knew nuts about computers and he is buying her the top range laptop so she can "surf net & watch DVDs"

Then, there's the "specials", nerds, geeks whatever you call them... They'll collect all the leaflets they can find, easily hundreds pieces and stuff them into their smelly backpacks. They'll hide in a corner and stare at female promoters without blinking. They'll follow models in miniskirts around the show and stare. They'll challenge promoters to computer specs and prices, to show their superior nerdy knowledges. SICK!

My disappointment for the show is I got assigned to a brand that's relatively unknown. Laptop shoppers still go for reputable brands afterall. I only managed to sell 4.5 sets over the 4 days as compared to 19 sets in 4 days from a friend at Txshiba. You might wonder how did I sell the 0.5 set? I prmoted it together with Ben, B1 and we shared the comission for that set. After calculating, my hourly pay (comission + basic/ total hours) is just $4+. Very miserable! But at least I got to meet more people than slacking at home and I picked up some computer knowledge from this show as well.
